Carmel Walsh’s Nature-Inspired Shoes
Part footwear, part foliage, Carmel Walsh’s botanical-infused shoes
were made for walking…and talking about. The Tuscany-based designer
enlisted the help of a local wood restorer to carve the walnut mid-heel
soles, which she then plied with a population of succulent-sprouting
“barnacles” made from vegetable-tanned leather, organic cotton, linen,
hemp, and cork.
Inspired by mountaintop terrace farming, coral reefs, and the colors
of “decay and erosion of the earth,” Walsh sought to create a
low-impact shoe with an afterlife beyond the landfill. “What is born
from nature returns to it in the end,” she tells Yatzer. “It is my hope that in their second life they will decay and grow as an art piece.
Gum under the Table: Wear all pink and balance a table on your head. You'll be instantly recognizable as gum!
Leaf Blower: Wear regular clothes. Wear a hat with a leaf hanging down
from the rim so that the leaf is in front of your face. When people ask
what you are blow on the leaf and make them guess.
Sunny Side up Eggs: Wear all white. Attach a piece of yellow felt to
your derriere. When people ask what you are bend over and say “sunny
side up.”
Matchstick: Wear all white clothing with a red stocking
cap. (could add flames)
Web Surfer: Wear a wetsuit like surfers wear, then drape yourself with fake cobwebs.
Time is on my side: Wear regular clothes. Attach watches or clocks to
one side of your outfit; wear a bunch of wristwatches on only one
wrist.
A Highway: Wear all black sweat suit, stick on white or yellow tape on your legs and chest to resemble lines in a road.
Here are the visuals from my thesis display exhibit at Parsons Design + Technology 09.
(just in case someone is seeing this work for the first time - it is all made with confiscated scissors from airport security measures. I purchased them from ebay from someone who bought that them at an airport auction...)
I re-post statement here:
What brings people a feeling of safety and protection? Do security measures at airports or spiritual connection?
Confiscated weapons of mass construction questions how protection manifests in our current cultural epoch.
Sculptures, wearable art, and large-scale installations (proposed for exhibition in an airport) are constructed with thousands of scissors recycled from confiscated airport security procedures.
Just like a pure resonant note shatters a glass, a visual imprint of beauty and perfection changes a viewer.
These circular sculptures hold an essence of the macrocosm and microcosm bringing harmony on an archetypal level.
more images coming soon of my classmates.. some amazing and inspiring work!
Email me your address and I will send you one .. I have extras!

This has to be the ultimate Fancy Dress Costume that I have seen yet! Kasey McMahon of Southern California has created a 'Birdcage Dress' that really works! She even has a link on her Websight on how to create your own Birdcage Dress in 25 steps! Don't miss some of her other clever projects to be found Here! Gives a whole new meaning to having songs at your feet!!!
Last night I made my first confiscated weapon necklace with collapsible scissors and blue twist ties.. with some of the small scissors that I have in my growing collection of all sized scissors purchased from airport excess. I made an D.I.Y. (do it yourself) instruction video that I will post on instructables.com and here.. when I finish piecing it together soon. My necklace model is Tzumei Hsiao.
More necklaces to come... this is another foray into wearable art.. armor... a more intimate expression of the same theme of protection. A wearable mandala!
check this guy out!
daito manabe came and spoke to my algorithmic animation class on friday morning. he is a musician, artist and does brilliant and fascinating things with new media.
he hooked up electrodes to his face and arms .. the music in the first video is playing his face and in the third + fourth video he is playing the music connected to the electric sensors on his arms.. and he also makes the spoons move around and dance. totally bizarre and unlike anything I have ever seen before... LOVE IT.
By flexing his muscles Manabe generates small electric pulses which he uses to control other systems. In this video you can see how he controls the sound by moving his hands, the sensors are hidden under his sleeves and are connected to his underarms. Under the surface of the table, there is a slider with an electromagnet on it, which he also controls by flexing his muscles. So it is the electromagnet that lets the spoons dance around on the table. At the end of the video you can see the hidden technology.
I saved this business card below from a wonderful clothing boutique in Prescott, AZ called the Llama House. I have hung it on my fridge and in my sight for a few years and now it is specially placed in my sketch book. I have long been inspired by beauty, symmetry, body decoration and outrageous (haute couture) fashion.
In the last few weeks I have received layers of this same message from various sources - resonance with me and this notion of devastating beauty.
(15.1 page 257) More than beauty - perfection. Perfection shakes the depths of your being. . . . . . But why did it hurt so much? Infinite nostalgia versus infinite unity. The sorrows of the kingdom like an abyss under my feet. Past a certain degree, there is something devastating about beauty. Such a fine line between opening and being ripped open.
A quote from this cd - Grief and Praise by Martin Prechtel, which you can order from www.floweringmountain.com
In this talk Martin says:
Praise is a skill. It is not just saying a lot of florid words. The idea of eloquence is to hit the mark. To devastate the other persons hatred with beauty.
Simply viewing a mandala is believed by Buddhists to be enough to
change one's mind stream by creating a strong imprint of the beauty of
perfection of the Buddha's mind, as is represented in the mandala
itself. As a result of this imprint, one may be able to find greater
compassion, awareness, and a better sense of well-being.
I personally believe that seeing any great work of art, costume, dress or mandala can create an imprint of the beauty of perfection and create a sense of well-being. This is my goal with my artwork!! Here are s few pictures of dresses, costumes and artwork that I have made over the years.
I love the textures and shapes of this knit (+ clothespin) wearable art
guess I wonder how do these images fit with my overlapping theme of the modern Sacred and technology? well... hhhmmmm clothes, costumes and body decoration was one of my very first interests and sometimes I just love the visuals. maybe somehow they will fit into this thesis exploration ..or not?
A couple of years ago I worked for a wearable artist/ fashion designer in San Fransisco- Latifa Medjdoub. I ran her 3 knitting machines and helped make and sculpt her felted wool clothing line. She has some very fantastic items that you can see on her website latifadesign.com
